The inspiration behind Buckwheat comes from a love for old shop signs—back when every letter oozed character with its imperfections and charm. Modern signs often feel too polished, but OpenType-SVG technology finally made it possible to bring those gritty, tactile textures back to life. This trio is a celebration of the handmade and the characterful—a nod to the past with a fresh perspective.

What sets it apart is the OpenType-SVG format. Unlike traditional fonts, SVG fonts capture the intricate textures and details of real ink and paint strokes, giving your designs a beautifully handcrafted, almost tactile quality. These fonts work best in SVG-compatible software, like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (2020 or newer), Affinity Designer, or any app that supports OpenType-SVG features.

If you’re not using SVG-compatible software, no worries. Buckwheat also includes standard TTF fonts (vector-based) for maximum flexibility. While they don’t have the same stunning textures as the SVG versions, they’re clean, sharp, and great for when you need a more traditional option.

What are SVG Fonts?

This new format allows font designers to incorporate as much detail as our hearts desire into our products by using high-resolution bitmap images for the glyphs as opposed to traditional vector.

Software Requirements

At the time of writing this, SVG Fonts are only supported by Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CC (2018+) and Procreate. The support for this fantastic new format is growing as they become more popular!

Extended Commercial License

Use this collection of design goods within an unlimited number of commercial projects. This includes end products for sale, print and web work, social media, etc. Read the Extended Commercial License for more details.
